1. Biography of Ram Charan
Ram Charan was born in 1939 in India where he worked in his family shoe shop while he was growing up. Before becoming a consultant he earned some degrees in: engeneering in Banaras Hindu University and a doctorate and an MBA while he was in Harvard. Then he taught in some universities such as: Harvard or Boston University.

Charan has worked for several companies as a consultant like KLM or the Bank of America. He also has written several popular books in business: The New Rules for Getting the Right Things Done in Difficult Times, Boards That Deliver, What The CEO Wants You To Know, Boards At Work.
Charan was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources in 2000 and named a Distinguished Fellow in 2005. He is also a director of Austin Industries.


In this excerpt of the book “Leadership in the era of economic uncertainty” the author, Ram Charan, explains how the CEO of DuPont has reacted to the economic crisis of nowadays. Mr.Holliday, CEO of DuPont, realised how huge was the crisis when he flew to Japan when one customer was in a very fragile financial position.

In that situation, Holliday made a plan in order to try to save the situation of economic crisis by creating groups of experts to make plans of action and informing employees about the crisis and how this was affecting the company, try to conserve cash and reducing costs.
With this measures and reducing the company’s contrators, the process that will help the company was done in six weeks. So this teach us that when taking notice of crisis and reactin fast and in an efficent way can solve a precarious situation.
