In the article "Losing Face", The Economist states how social websites can be a drag for companies.
Firms use social networks to broaden their message to a larger audience, but several crew members from Virgin Airlines were fired and some in British Airways are being investigated after insulting passengers via facebook and other social networks, which gives a really poor image of the company.
Companies say they have different ways to prevent this from happening, such as private channels inside the companies, or signing policies. But apparently they don´t quite work as they should.
Companies need to monitor closely online activity of their employees, since they don´t usually recognize the problem until its already too late. Prevention is definitively better than cure.
